Stephanie Dowrick on our power to help and heal

In this encouraging talk Rev Dr Stephanie Dowrick supports us to respond to daily life with revived hope. Even when ‘hope’ seems impossible. Paying attention to our strengths is to reclaim our own power.  Stephanie’s words include: ‘In each situation in your life, I don’t know exactly which strength you will need; but you do. I don’t know either exactly how this strength will manifest itself when it’s needed; but I do know that with patience, and some inner quiet…you will discover what will support you best.’

She continues, ‘We can also see that even in thinking about “strengths” a kind of shyness overtakes many of us because those of us who have been raised in religious traditions are more familiar with an underlying sense of unworthiness, inadequacy, even sinfulness, than we are with contemplating the notion that we have all the strengths we need – and can claim them. Find courage in this teaching from Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day.”‘
